Castellina is central in terms of visits to anywhere in Chianti and the nearby areas of Tuscany, including Volterra and the Val d’Orcia, located as it is at an important crossroads on the via Chiantigiana. It is surrounded by beautiful countryside and interesting historical sights. Indeed, within Castellina itself there are several things to see, including the Via delle Volte, a covered street that was part of the defences of the town, and the Archaeological Museum. Close by there is a very well preserved Etruscan tomb at Montecalvario. Castellina is best known for its relaxed ambiance. The main street is mostly pedestrians only and there are several good restaurants and cafès to choose from. There is also a good range of outlets for food and other supplies for holiday-makers based in the vicinity and of course for anyone passing through. An out-door café and restaurant in Castellina in Chianti Comfortable buses run from Sienna to Castellina but a car is recommended if you plan to rent your holiday home in the vicinity. Last but not least, Castellina has one of the best ice cream shops in Tuscany – Antica Delizia. To get there on foot from town, just walk along the main street in the direction of the turn-off for Florence. Antica Delizia is located on the corner across the main road.
