Walled hamlets and small villages are typically referred to as castelli in Tuscany, the same term being used for castles in the more traditional sense. The entire village of Volpaia is thus often correctly referred to as the Castello di Volpaia, although that is actually the registered name of the winery located there. The winery, in fact, owns much of Volpaia. The village is nevertheless well worth a visit for a stroll through its quiet lanes and perhaps a tranquil lunch. Volpaia has three good restaurants and offers beautiful views in all directions. The village of Volpaia in the Chianti area of Tuscany Volpaia also makes a good vacation base for those who plan to enjoy and explore the Chianti Classico wine zone. Although not located on a main road, Volpaia is set just a few km north of the castles area of Chianti, around Gaiole and Radda, to the east of the Via Chiantigiana.
